Tuổi Hoa Publishing House as a institution in the Southern Vietnamese literary field (1954-1975)

Abstract

Officially operating from 1962 to 1975, Tuổi Hoa Publishing House became an institution in the Southern Vietnamese literary field from 1954 to 1975. Through the lens of paraliterary institutions, this article analyzes the historical context, social conditions, and cultural factors that influenced the establishment and development of Tuổi Hoa. The study also examines how the publishing house built the strategies and organized resources to sustain its two flagship publications: the biweekly Tuổi Hoa magazine and the Tuổi Hoa book collection, which boasted a greater number of publications than other children's publishing houses. Notably, the circulation figures for these two publications were remarkably high, eclipsing those of most contemporary children's publishers, even in times of profound political and social instability. With consistently high-quality, diverse, and engaging content, Tuổi Hoa gained credibility within the book distribution system, receiving long-term orders from bookstores and fostering a devoted readership that actively engaged with, supported, and contributed creative works. Beyond providing knowledge and nurturing reading habits among young readers, the publishing house also cultivated a unique literary space that nurtured and encouraged emerging writers. Through its processes of selecting, editing, and introducing publications, Tuổi Hoa publishing house became a crucial link in shaping literary practices and simultaneously established a close relationship between authors and the public. In the period from 1954 to 1975, Tuổi Hoa held a unique and pivotal role. Beyond its established reputation and solid standing within the publishing sector, it acted as a significant catalyst in shaping a dynamic, diverse, and burgeoning literary movement in Southern Vietnam.
