Abstract

Circular No. 16/2022/TT-BGDDT stipulates that the implementation of library reading sessions is one of the mandatory criteria in the annual assessment and classification of school libraries. This study used a questionnaire survey method, conducted with 224 librarians at schools in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The survey content focused on four main groups of issues: (1) the level of implementation of library reading sessions, (2) implementing personnel and welfare regimes for librarians participating in this activity, (3) librarians' perceptions of the effectiveness of library reading sessions, and (4) difficulties in the implementation process. The survey results showed that about 70% of school libraries in the study sample had implemented library reading sessions. Nearly 90% of librarians participated in teaching this activity, either independently or in coordination with subject teachers. However, up to 80% of survey participants said they had not received any welfare benefits when conducting library reading sessions. The main difficulties noted included: lack of professional guidance from management agencies, increased workload, limited facilities, and especially limited pedagogical capacity, causing difficulties in developing lesson plans and organizing as well as managing classes.
