Abstract
In modern society, individualism is increasingly emphasized and prioritized over traditional and collective values. Under the influence of the New Age movement, a wide range of new spiritual beliefs and practices have emerged and spread widely, exerting a profound impact on individualism - particularly through the practice of Tarot. This article focuses on examining the relationship between Tarot and individualized spiritual culture in the modern era in Vietnam. Tarot creates a “safe space” for users, especially young Vietnamese people today. Influenced by the process of the de-institutionalization of religion, Tarot in Vietnam has emerged as a light spirituality that infused with local cultural codes. Drawing on Paul Heelas and Bruce’s theory and employing qualitative research methods, the study reveals the shifts taking place in the spiritual life of contemporary Vietnamese society. Alongside the qualitative results, the study also employs the original survey data from 388 participants, thereby offering new evidence of Tarot’s prevalence and practice in Vietnam. Under these influences, Vietnam’s contemporary spiritual culture has undergone significant transformations, strongly reflecting personal spirituality while remaining intertwined with traditional values.
